Most people have probably never thought about that. Including myself.

Because (I'm guessing) a lot of people have preconcieved notions about what homeless people are like.

I'm sure they aren't aware of the fact that a lot of war veterans are homeless when they return from fighting because of the difficulties the face when returning home. There are also homeless people who aren't homeless because of something that they did (i.e. the place they were living was torn down/theycan't find a job/mental health issues/etc.). And there are people who choose to be homeless (They prefer not to be completely attached to a capitalist society).

If you don't want someone on the steet spending money you give them on drugs and alcohol (if you're worried about that) buy them a sandwich or something and give them that.

Seriously, homeless people are no more threatening than the ricchest people in the city. A millionare could be a murderer/druggie/alcoholic just as much as an unfortunate person with no money.

Watching birds interact and feed is entertaining to people. Watching the homeless interact and feed is not entertaining, at least to the normal person! Feeding the homeless is a different feeling of satisfaction than that of feeding birds. Birds are beautiful creatures that are innocent and non-aggressive. Homeless are, for the most part, not so innocent and can be very aggressive. You probably won't feel threatened by birds, but you possibly may from a homeless person. Birds don't talk back and call you names if you don't help them out. Bird clean themselves and care about their appearance. Some, not all, homeless could care less.

Because they like the idea of birds in their gardens, but not that of the homeless on their doorstep.

You know about the mechanism that makes people feel more sympathetic to someone they did a favour? I think quite a lot of people are afraid of just that. As long as they can see a homeless person as someone who in some way is in this situation through their own fault they don't feel they have to do anything about it.

Did you know that feeding birds human food messes with their digestive system and eventually, they could die. Even a simple thing like bread. The reason most don't feed the homeless (on the street, because I feed homeless at a soup kitchen) Is because a majority ends up spending money you give them on drugs and alcohol or something bad like that. It's a waste of money. Alot of people, if they don't give them money, don't give them food either because many homeless people are dirty or crazy (stereotype, I know) and they don't want to be attacked.

You have the right to do whatever you want with your money. But most people see the homeless as folks that are the product of their own making. The choices most homeless made in life have resulted in why they are homeless. Let them live with their choices.

sometimes the homeless will accept food from you. and sometimes they just want money for drugs and alcohol. it's a sad dilemma ~ but, everytime i buy food for the homeless and they are GRATEFUL, then I know that I DID MY PART!

Because most people know that the bird isn't liable to turn around and slice their throat and the bird moves on when it's done rather than follow you allover town asking for more.

One possible reason is that people know that birds will absolutely eat what you give them, not spend it on wine or crack. (Not that most homeless people do that, of course. But you can't always tell. I would rather support fat birds.)
