When i type with my new laptop, it writes over the text that was there before. This is a hassle when i am editing papers. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Press Insert or Ins key and you are sorted! (With some laptop keyboard layouts, this may mean pressing [Fn] + [Ins] or something similar. This key just toggles whether you 'insert' new text or overwrite old text.

What program are you typing in ?
Most word processors gives you a choice that you have to set as to; INSERT or TYPEOVER
You must be set to TYPEOVER
If I knew what program you are using I could tell you how to change it ..... but, just look for an option, most likely on the bottom center of the page you will see the word "Insert or Typeover". If you see one of these words, just clk it and it will change to the other. If this doesn't work, repost the question with some information pls.

Do exactly what the 1st person said.. that's your answer! you just need to hit the Insert Key.
