approx. three weeks ago i stepped off a step wrong and heard my ancle snap. went to the med center and the dr. x-rayed it and said i had an avulsion break. he even drew a diagram of the break. later another say's it was an old injury. had it redone and they said it is not broke. i am still having problems with it and it is still about three times it's size. it also bruised on both sides and up my leg. i never had that with a sprain before. what does this sound like to you?

Usually when a sprain occurs there is no "snapping" sound. Also, three weeks later there shouldn't be nearly so much swelling. Did any of these doctors suggest a treatment course for you? You can go back to your original doctor and request to see your x-rays which you can bring to another doctor if you would like a second opinion. It seems odd that you have been told so many different things. If indeed you suffer from an avulsion break, you should check out : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bone_fracture
It is very detailed in explaining exactly what an avulsion break is, the symptoms and treatment options.
I hope that this helped. Feel better soon.

Sounds to me like you have what doctors call a severe sprain, those can hurt worse than actually breaking a bone. The bruising and swelling are expected and the best way to help yourself is to remember RICE

R-REST
I-ICE
C-COMPRESSION
E-ELEVATION

You'll need to put an ace bandage on it but not too tight, put your foot up higher than your head and lay a bag of ice or frozen veggies and just rest. Take an ibuprofen--up to 400MG--at a time every 6-8 hours and if after another week go to the original doctor and explain your ongoing symptoms and pain with your ankle. You deserve a direct answer from that doctor and the proper care.

Good Luck!

I suggest that you consult an orthopedist. Only the specialist would be able to evaluate if you have a sprain, or a minor fracture and what appropriate medical measure should be undertaken.

In the meantime, I recommend warm compress to relax the surrounding muscles and ease circulation. Likewise, keep the problem area warm and unstressed (don't walk on it yet!).

When an avulsion fracture occurs, the tendon pulls off a tiny fragment of bone. These fractures are usually not badly displaced but because they involve a tendon they take about six weeks to resolve.

...hang in there...

sounds like you need a 3rd opinion!

Are you caring for it properly? Ice, heat, medication, whatever they told you to do? Because if you arent following the directions to elevate it, stay off it for a certain length of time, etc. It will take twice as long to heal.

If you are taking Dr's orders and its still big like that? Id go to another Dr and get more xrays and a better explanation of swelling, breaks, etc.

Good luck!!! Hope you feel better....

Keep going back to the doctor until the condition is resolved. Try talking to friends about what doctors they know or can recommend. Persistence will win out. I think also that you should keep all weight off of that leg. Crutches may be the answer.

It sounds like a sprain but I would get a 2nd opinion just incase. You don't want to end up having surgery or anything.
I hope it heals soon for you!

It sounds like to me you need to keep your foot elevated whenever you can and soak it in warm water with Epsom Salts. Cold compresses can also help.
