Hydroelectric dams are the best example of direct and quick alteration of the environment by human works.

For Asian Studies, look up the Three Gorges Dam in China, and how that has affected towns along the Yangtze and the local environment.

For African, The Aswan High Dam in Egypt along the Nile and how that has altered silt deposits further up the river, and made it harder for farmers there to cultivate the precious land along the river.

Desertification of the Sahel region, and how it is increasing the size of the Sahara and pushing farmers further and further South
