Be careful: obvious does not always mean correct.

You see before you a freshly prepared block consisting of four cubes by four cubes by four cubes. The outside of the block has been painted green. How many blocks will have paint on them?

If you visualize the block as made up of 64 cubes (4 x 4 x 4), the middle 8 (2 x 2 x 2) would be unpainted.

This is simple subtraction: 64 - 8:

The answer is 56.

You could also do it the hard way by trying to count 16 on the top layer, 12 on the 2nd layer, 12 on the 3rd layer and 16 on the bottom layer for a total of ... 56 again!

52!

The outside of the block does consist of 56 cubes but if the block is not lifted to paint underneath, 12 Cubes will remain totally unpainted.

64-12=52

I'll assume that you are asking what is the minimum number of blocks that have paint on them, as otherwise it could be all of them (i.e., the inside is painted too).

The answer is therefore: 16+16+8+8+4+4 = 56.
