It isn't possible. Sound is the vibration of molecules. In order for sound to transmit, molecules have to collide with each other, transferring their vibrations to the next. That cannot happen in outer space. Somebody is pulling your leg.

Sound doesn't travel in a vacuum, if he heard anything it would have to be a transmission of some sort. Being that it could have been any of the thousands of radio signals leaving Earth every day.

Sound doesn't exist in space because it is a vacuum. Sound can not travel through a vacuum.
