I've heard all these doomsdayer cultists talking about the pole shift and the end of the world in 2012. Anyone know what this is or if there's any truth to it?

To a first approximation, you can assume anyone assigning a date to the end of the world is a loon.

Which pole? Physical or magnetic?

The physical pole [ where directly overhead you would have Polaris - by the way, NOT the brightest star ] has always shifted. Many thousands of years ago it 'pointed' toward the Big Dipper, and many other places. WHY? Because the Earth 'wobbles' because of many factors, like the moon, oceans, and un-even land distribution.

The magnetic pole also wobbles, but there is some evidence [in rocks where the magnetism is 'locked in' at formation] that the North-South orientation completely flips. You compass would reverse its pointing & think that 'North' is in Antartica!!

But NEITHER will cause the end of the world!!!!!!!!!

We have already had a pole shift when the dinosauers were distroyed. The end will begin in 2019, not 2012, you've been listening to too much Rush.
