I don't know. I once spent a summer with the Pwo Karen people of Thailand and they had huge pegs and things in their ears--I only had small pierced earrings, but they seemed to appreciate the fact that I had holes of any size, although I suppose they thought I'd be better off with large ones like theirs.
It looked uncomfortable to me, but didn't seem to bother them.
On the other hand, a clerk at the gas station had two huge magnifying circles in his ears here in the States and I did not find it attractive at all.
Hey Ho, Maggie!

They have forgotten that they will be old and in wheelchairs etc. They lived for the moment of shock value and the "coolness" of it..They think they're invincible, but once they take out their plugs when their 90 and can see the huge holes left, they will remember what jacka*sses they once were..what fond memories

Not many people can pull that look off. I see it around though. They think it's cool when they get earlobe plugs, but they don't think about how, if they ever wanted to stop wearing them, they would have to get the skin sergically back in place. Eww.

I think it's one of the funniest things I've ever seen. I'd like to see the look on their face when they figure out they'll have to cut part of their ear off if they ever want it to look normal again. tehe tehe

It's a form of self-expression, just like tattoos, or any type of piercing. Personally, I think it's kinda gross, but then I'm not a fan of piercing. Anyway, who am I to judge?

I think their just idiots who want to 'express themselves' as if mutilating your body is an expression. I'm talking about teens and other young people, not tribal cultures or peoples that do them because its part of their culture.

Self expression through body modification!
Different strokes for different folks as they say.
Can you say you don't do or act or display something that others might not understand?

It is tradition. Everyone in their group has always done that so they are next up for hoop ears.
