There is no cutoff as to when a woman can conceive and give birth. The only cutoff would be menopause. The risk is for the fetus and usually not the mother. The chance of congenital defects increases with the mother's age. A 35 year old woman has a 1 in 250 chance of giving birth to an infant with congenital defect (a.k.a Down's Syndrome or mental retardation). And the risk increases exponential after 35 years of age. I have seen 14 year old mothers and 50 year old mothers. The greatest concern for mothers is availability of good health care and good nutrient, which shouldn't be a problem in the US.

There are many women...( I know a few personally) that are having babies over the age of 40. If you are healthly and under a doctors care there is no reason not to have a baby. I'm sure there is a reasonable age cut off. One of my best friend's is pregnant at the age of 44. My 4th child was born when I was 37... I am now 41...we may be planning one more. :)

I'm forty and do not smoke whatever, in particular throughout being pregnant. An quick strive at each and every one in eighth grade taught me they are equally smelly, nasty, and pointless. I consider it's constantly first-class to err on the aspect of caution even as pregnant. I don't always buy the "well we did it and our youngsters grew to become out ok", not about whatever, particularly. Persons use that alot and i have observed that most likely they're sincerely now not ok. What does "they became out ok" really mean? No obvious issues? They're flawlessly best? None of these descriptions genuinely manner anything. I recall talking with a neighbor years ago and this very discipline got here up--smoking while pregnant. The mother in question had three youngsters and insisted that she did not get why they stated do not smoke, she had and all of her children "grew to become out simply great". Good, two of them had been severely ADHD, one had chronic migraines at 6 years historic, all three of them had been learning disabled, and extra. I am now not pronouncing smoking caused all that. But the point is this: how will you say what issues your child could have are or aren't regarding bad habits during pregnancy? Or negative parenting selections, or immature moms and dads, or any other element. I remind my husband of this and what number of of his loved ones participants are alcoholics when he tells me how they have been raised and says, "And we grew to become out just nice."

I think the magic age now is around 35-38. Supposedly, your risks increase after age 35.
