Right click on the file or folder and select "Properties" In the Properties dialogue box you will have the Share tab and have the option to make the folder private. This means if you select this option that only your profile can see the file or folder. Share passwording is only available if you are actually configured for network useage. Then you can use the same basic procedure to share the file or folder with either read only password or read/write password.

XP Doesnt have a build in feature to allow this, however if you do the following you can make it password protected.

Right click folder -> Send To -> Compressed Zip Folder

Then when created go to the folder and right click and select properties, then somewhere you can choose to password protect the folder.

you can put the contents (the entire folder if you wish) into a compressed folder. If you have XP, right clk the folder, choose "Send To" and choose Compressed (.zipped) folder.
You can password the.compressed folder.
To UNzip, just dbl clk the folder.
