Volume of a liquid is measured with a graduated cylinder. Volume of a solid object is measured by measuring the sides and using the proper formula. For irregular objects, use water displacement , see how much the water goes up in a graduated cylinder, when the object is put into it.( That is if the object is not water soluble) Gases spread out to take up any volume that you put them in.

Volume can be measured in a number of ways. SInce most people speak of volume of liquids most routinely then the usual instruments are pipettes, volumetric flasks, and graduated cylinders.

for a liquid- graduted cylinder
For a solid- a graduated cylinder full of water sitting on a balance, then you put your solid in the water and the change in weight (grams) is volume or water displacement
Or you could measure the dimensions with measuring tape and apply a formula

Depends greatly on the volume you are dealing with (picoliters are measured differently than kiloliters) and what phase of matter it is you're measuring.

if its a solid object, volume is usually measured by filling a container with a known amount of water and then engulfing the solid object into the water, and seeing how much water it displaced. the difference is the volume.

for liquids and irregular shaped objects (by water displacement) you use a graduated cylinder
for evenly shaped objects, use a metric ruler and LxWxH
