Because, if you're breathing, you have more than the millions of humans buried in cemeteries and graveyards around the world.
Because, if you eat, you have more than the millions starving in Africa and wartorn countries in the world.
Because, if you have an education, you have more than millions who don't.
Because, if you have a family, you have more than the millions of orphans in the world.
Because, if you have a home, you have more than the millions who do not have a place to sleep warmly at night.
Because whichever way you look at it, you might have less than a celebrity or rich person, but you will always have something someone doesn't have, and most probably wants.
It's a 'glass half empty/half full' scenario: if you spend your life thinking about the things you don't have, you'll lose the things you do- which will turn out to be more important than the things you've replaced them with.

It is only important for someone to appreciate what they have if they can make it personal to their own experience. People say "you need to appreciate what you have" because they have already been through that part in their life where they hold value over things. My guess is you might have a T1 or cable/DSL internet connection but could you imagine having to use dial up 56k (its like 100x slower) so in that way you can value or appreciate what you have. Another example is if you dont already have a job and when you finally do start making money and you can save up to buy something that you really have wanted for a while there is a feeling that you yourself have earned that. That is what appreciation is.

Because life itself is a gift from God.
We were chosen to experience existance. The wind on your face, the sound of a baby laughing. A good meal. A good job done.
If you are not alive, you could never feel gentle wind on your cheek, you could never hear and feel joy at the sound of a child who is sharing the blessing of existance. Or the enjoyment of bounty God has created for us. When we are dust, we have no hands to work with, we will be with God, but what more can we create, right now by my efforts I can take something and make a thing that did not exist before, the joy of creation. Possibly a part of why God made us in his image.
The things of life can be taken away, time itself is fragile from moment to moment you never know what will happen. If it slips from you like water through your fingers at the end you will grasp your fists vainly to drink and vainly thirst because you never took life in.
To appreciate to to know you are alive.

Because,as a society,we seem to not appreciate what we have and therefore, take those things for granted. There are others who would see what we have as a luxury. Once we lose those things, we miss them because we took them for granted so much. When we are sitting around complaining about what we don't have, that is when it's best to think about how hard we had to work to get whatever we are complaining about and how hard we would find for those things if someone was trying to take them. It's not always best to keep up with the Jones, the green is not always greener on the other side, that could be what others are thinking about us and we're sittting there being ungrateful for whatever it is we're blessed to have. Even the richest man is not truly satisfied and happy.

I'll try too, but it might be hard to grasp when you are in a frame of mind to ask this question and you might not understand until hard times fall on you. Life goes in cycles. We have good times and hard times. There is opposition in all things. When the hard times fall, it is all to common to gravitate to the negative thoughts like,"why me", "life sucks", "I hate this", and so on. If we dwell on the negative, things seem worse. Then other areas of our lives seem bad to and it's all to easy to get depressed, angry and just feel bad. There will seem to be a dark cloud that follows you. If you want to break that cycle and feel good and happy again you need to find the good. This is when you need to think thoughts like, "yeah, that part of my life is bad, BUT, I have this other thing to be thankful for." If you find a few things everyday to appreciate, you feel better and happier. When I feel frustated with things in my life, I just read the newspaper about the people in war zones or natural disaster zones and suddenly all my problems seem more managable, and I'm in a better frame of mind because I realize my little problems are just that - little. Everything is temporary, so the bad will pass. When things go well, we should appreciate it or we miss out and don't even realize the good is happening. For example, we want more material things-bigger house, nicer car, and so on. We should be happy with the things we already have (they might be something someone else is wishing for). If we don't stop and think of the good things in our life, we will not enjoy them when we have them because good times are temporary too. To sum it up, we need to appreciate what we have in order to be happy.

If you don't appreciate what you have, then you'll never have happiness and peace. You'll always be left wanting more and be a slave to ambition and jealousy.
But if you appreciate what you have too much, you'll become stagnated and your own life will outgrow you. Sometimes, you need to be an ingrate to keep wanting to achieve and experience new things.

While it is good to aspire to more, we must take stock of what we have done. This gives us a sense of accomplishment..To be thankful for what we have helps us to see how much further we can go. On the other hand, by taking stock, we can se what we have done and realize how much we already have and be happy with that.

Because having a spirit of thankfulness is not only a good character trait, it serves as a reminder that many people have far less. I think it also creates good karma.

When you appreciate what you have, you see the world in a different perspective. If you want to really know why imagine yourself without all the advantages that you have today.
