It wasn't always salty. It was once a beautiful crystal clear spring where children frolicked and played. People could drink freely and it was the uniting factor in world peace
BUT THEN GEORGE BUSH BECAME PRESIDENT.... and he jacked it ALL up! Made the clear fresh ocean salty, made the ozone layer deteriorate, ripped down the rain forests, and killed all that was cute, fluffy, and good. That bahsterd even killed KENNY! He even gave me a crappy level one rating on Yahoo. God,... if only someone would give me 10 POINTS for a best answer. Then I wouldn't care about the salt in the ocean or that lazy jerk fishing at camp David while I can only shamelessly fish for 10 POINTS. In fact I can't even fish well because of all the dam salt in the ocean.
OK fine ... I've got nothin. I like your new avatar?!

Off the top of my head, in the hydrologic cycle, as the rainwater, it erodes rocks and picks up minerals. These minerals are carried to the sea.
OK, I went to wiki. The above part was theorized by Halley, the comet guy,and is only partially correct. That part of the process is called continental weathering.
Additionally, there is sodium released from the ocean floor, and the chlorine comes from volcanoes and things like that.
Addendum: Sorry, I posted the wrong link earlier. That question, and the poster seem to have been deleted.

all rivers lead to the ocean, and the ocean is salty because it contains all the silt.
