Because funeral is based on the ancient Latin word Funus which meant death. I doubt even they thought funerals were fun either but that is the way words of their language are.

thats funny! I never realized that until now, thanks for making my day. But seriously maybe it was spelled differently way back in the old days and then they modernized it... just my opinion...I mean thats what they do with tons of other words right?
