Bright red blood is oxygenated blood traveling from the lungs to the body. Blood after it has released its oxygen is darker red. The actual chemical name is oxyhemoglogin for the bright red and carboxyhemoglobin for the dark red.

It's the amount of oxygen in your blood. The blood in our veins is actually more blue in color, but as soon as it hits air, the oxygen content turns it more red.
