He changed it to P. Diddy after her broke up with Jennifer Lopez.

actually he's changed his name 3TIMES. puff daddy was the name of an album when he first started:
1) Puff Daddy
then it was
2) P.Diddy
now it's just
3) Diddy
and dont call him anything else cause he gets pissed!

He changed his named because of several reasons one is because he wanted it to be simpler and 2. He had got into some legal issues with the Japanese band Puffy AmiYumi.
