I always put together a basket that has infant medications in it. Infant Tylenol, Infant Advil, Baby Anbesol, Infant Mylacon, Infant cough medicine, an infant thermometer (they make a neat one now that is a pacifier and the temperature is digitally displayed on the outside and there is also a pacifier that you can put the medication in to give the baby). I also include a small notepad and pencil so that the mother can write down the day, time, temperature and medications given when the baby gets sick to keep track of for when she has to take the baby to the doctor.

Babies always seem to get sick in the middle of the night, when no stores are open, or on the weekends and holidays when their pediatricians office is closed. Most new mothers don't think to have these things in the house until the baby acutally needs them.

Most people don't think of this but the best baby shower gift I've seen is the ear thermometer. It's something that every new mom should have but they usually don't know that until things happen and they have to go out in the middle of the night to try and find one. Plus, unlike diapers or baby items, this is a gift that will last from newborn to college.

We had our baby 9 months ago, and some of our fashionable friends presented us with Bloomers Diaper Cakes as a first time gift. It was BLUE HYDRANGEAS, Large 3-Tier cake made of 100 Stage 1 diapers (there is also 2-tier with 40 diapers). Each tier was tied with baby blue tulle and adorned with bunches of soft blue hydrangeas. It came wrapped in white tulle, tied with a satin bow and secured with an old-fashioned diaper pin ( http://www.spiffybaby.com/home.php?cat=61 ). It was so beautiful, we did not want to use it for a while :). Also you might consider skin care for after birth by Basq ( http://www.spiffybaby.com/home.php?cat=114 ), which would make it a perfect, unique gift for any women. In fact these gifts prompted us to start a home business of luxury baby gifts ( http://www.spiffybaby.com ) which both my child and wife enjoy very much.

I just had a baby 4 mths ago and the best gift that I recv. was diapers and baby wipes. I got so much that I haven't bought any myself. Try not to get the newborn sizes its a waste of money , try size 1's and 2's , these little kids grow so fast.

DIAPERS, DIAPERS and DIAPERS... and a Diaper Genie for all them there DIAPERS! Can't stress enough... DIAPERS! Throw in a nice baby album for good measure or a cute outfit..

PS: if u feel dumb putting DIAPERS in a gift bag, slip the new mommy a gift card to WalMart or Target or something like that.. in the card write "For Diapers and whatever else you may need" .

Baby showers are hard b/c everyone gets novelty stuff and never the things u actually need... like, u guessed it, DIAPERS : )

Hope this helps : )

PSS: everyone who said offer services, way to F'en go!! Never thought of that, but that is def practical too!!!

If you are close to the mother, volunteering to come in and cook and help out around the house after the birth of the baby would be wonderful! i had several friends do that for me so i didnt have to worry about it. I also loved getting a diaper genie diapers and clothing for my daughter! Also cooking several meals and freezing them and giving them to her would be wonderful!

Stroller, Crib, baby clothes, baby car seat. A baby care package with diapers, baby wipes, baby shampoo, bottle set and pacifier.Maybe a nice spa package, she might need with all that time she has to stay up take care of the baby.
Hmmm...maybe if your feeling a little adventurous voluntary to take care of baby while she does her shopping or chores. Just to give her a break. I hope that helps .
