The boots over my cv joints are both busted. I've been told however that they cannot replace just the boots because of how much labor they have to do/ warranty issues that all they can do is replace the whoe axil. Has anyone ever had expereince with this. And if that is true I'd be better off waiting until my axil goes bad to get it replaced don't you think (as I've heard a bad cv axil gives you ample warning time to replace it before breaking down)

Once the boots are bad, the grease will come out and the joints themselves will fail VERY quickly. The labor involved to just do the boots is like triple the cost of just replaced the whole CV assembly. However, for many cars you can get split boot sets that allow you to replace the boots without disassembling the axles. As long as the joints are still good and have no excess play/noise, then I would see if this option is available for your car.

If you do nothing you will pay for all of it pretty quick, especially if you drive hard or live in a hot/dusty area.

You don't say what kind of car you have, but you need to get those boots replaced pronto. Keeping dirt and water out of those joints can save you big bucks. The boots are replaceable if you pull the CV shaft and replace them, but there are boots made to be installed without removing the shaft. Those boots have a seam that snaps together. Try another shop. Visit a good auto parts store and find out if they stock them for your car and then ask for a couple of recommendations for getting the work done. DON'T drive around with those torn boots. Wrecking those joints can be very expensive and they will get wrecked in just a couple days.

That's not the case. I've had just the boots replaced. If the wear has been severe and ruined the joints you will need to replace the entire axle.

Replacing just the boot wouldn't give you any warranty protection on the axle, but it really depends on what you expect to get out of it- as in how long you intend to keep the vehicle and what it's worth.
