Mainly because it rhymes with "nice."
But also because, men, through the ages, have tended to romanticise and idolise the femininity of women, putting them on a pedestal, and being unrealistic about their true attributes.
This is, of course, another way of keeping women in their place, a subversive way of not taking them seriously.
