Why do stupid people believe in astrology?

Stupid people will believe in almost anything. Many of them lack the critical reasoning abilities and logical acumen to make sound, reasoned decisions about the veracity of spurious techniques such as astrology, homeopathy, ouija boards and other hokum malarkey.

The real question is why do otherwise intelligent people believe in astrology? These are people who if they examined the evidence for this, or other dippy, weeble wobbly beliefs should normally conclude that there is no logical way it could possibly work, yet still continue to put their faith in quacks, telephone psychics, grief-raping 'mediums' and Baptist ministers. They do possess the intelligence, logical faculties and critical reasoning skills to debunk this bunk, and yet they continually, even deliberately choose to ignore the evidence provided by their own senses.

Perhaps they feel some sort of comfort believing that there is some measure of fate in the universe, something or some being that actually has a grand plan, and we are not just random bits of flotsam alone in a great big, impersonal universe. Perhaps they fear death so much that they have convinced themselves that there must be some meaning to their pathetic lives and that some force in the universe cares about what happens to them.

I don't know why people believe in these things. I'm even more perplexed when they use their illogical, unreasoning faith to reject scientific theories backed with actual, hard, physical evidence simply because it doesn't jibe with two sentences in their badly translated storybook.

Actually, I beg to differ! Astrology is an important part of our society. Its not all about the zodiac signs and I'm going to tell your future! Astrology helps sailors out in the sea. I helps direct the cattle drives so you can have beef on the table and not chicken....It helped Mrs.Cleo rip people off with 6.99 a min phone calls. Without astrology, The Greek gods would be lost, and men couldn't have started there great tales.So, be a little more appreciative toward it, and just because someone believes in something you don't doesn't make them stupid.... Oh, by the way, I'm not in any form an ignoramus or an idiot.

Some people, who are stupid, take astrology seriously. I had a long debate with an astrologer who couldn't decide whether the motions of the planets controlled destiny or whether the planets simply reported a destiny controlled by something else. In the former case, I tried to get her to identify the mechanism by which the planets exerted their influence, after proving that it could be neither light nor gravity. In the latter case, also I tried to get from her an explanation of how the planets were kept in coordination with the Divine Plan. I've never seen such extreme and ridiculous contortions of magical thinking trying to pose as science in my life. Not even Christian apologetics could outdo that astrologer in that regard.

Astrology is an irritating subject ;

Events in this universe are not predictable , the universe is not deterministic .

Astrologers fail to convince me .

Frankly speaking , I find astrologers are untruthful people and they can in no way predict the future.

I dont understand why a subject like astrology even exists !

I don't think you should call someone stupid because they believe in something that you don't believe in. Let's say you're very religious. Wouldn't it make you mad if people told you that you were stupid for believing in god? Everyone's entitled to their own opinions and beliefs without ridicule until it infringes upon someone else's rights. For example, you have the right to free speech, until you start berating other people for what they believe in.

P.S. I came back and added this because I think some people are getting confused, and are getting astrology mixed up with astronomy. It's two completely different things.

I suppose we all believe in something stupid, even Isaac Newton ,who spent an enormous amount of his time working on alchemy, and the Archbishop of Canterbury. I particularly despise those who believe in astrology, but then I would as I'm a Scorpio.

Same reason smart people do? I know smart people who believe in it. I don't understand why, but they do, and I can't deny they are also smart.

Now if you were to ask, "Why do stupid people use hand-held cell phones while driving?" then I think you would have a great question - there is NOTHING smart about anyone who talks with a cell phone to their ear while they drive.
