I'm actually sort of in this situation, so I can tell you from personal experience! Although the relationship was 1 and 1/2 years, not a few years. Anyway, in my case I'm giving up. For various reasons I doubt her ability to forgive me. In the relationship, I said things would change many times and they didn't, so really she would have no good reason to believe me now. Also, I want to let her just get over me and move on with her life. So I'm trying to do the same thing.
