For the song Waterfalls by TLC, what does this song mean or what is the message of the song?

The song and video tackle the issues of drug dealing and AIDS. Writer Etheridge explains that the image of a waterfall was chosen because its "one of the most beautiful things in the world, but at the same time is one of the most deadliest" [sic].
The chorus urges caution:
Don't go chasing waterfalls, please stick to the rivers and the lakes that you're used to

Well im gonna take a whack at it im guessing the song means like dont chase after things that not gonna pay any attention to u like the waterfall would represent like if u are a girl it would represent a boy that u like and you try and get his attention and ur just push aside by his ignore of you. do u get what im saying?

I think it means to stay focused and be humble. Try not to reach for things that u know are bad just to satisfy yourself... hard to explain, but u can interpret the song in your own way as well.

It is about a mother watching her son throw his life down the drain. It is telling people to slow down a little bitand not chase after things you can't catch or have no chance of rescuing. The womans son dies in the end.
