a map is a diagram that shows on a reduced scale where things are in relation to each other.
Typical maps in common use are: street maps (diagrams of the roads of a city in relationship to each other); road maps (diagrams of the roads of a district, state, country, etc, ignoring minor urban streets); maps in atlases (showing features of countries and of the world such as mountains, rivers, and towns); and maps showing the distribution of things (such as where copper is mined or areas of relative income deprivation).
