The Confederate submarine S.S. Hunley, shipwrecked on its maiden voyage is considered to be the first full submersible--meaning that it could return to the surface after a full dive. I believe it went down in Charleston Harbor during the Civil War. B.

During the American Revolution, there was an American made submarine names the turtle, it sank in a Connecticut river before it could be used. The first sub to be used in combat was the Confederate sub CSS Hunley in South Carolina, it sank during its first test and was raised and used again, only to sink right after its attack on a federal ship.
