Yes with time and practice you will get better at holding and working with the rope and lunge whip and all the tools. It gets esier the more you do it. I can hold a coil of rope in one hand so that it will not catch my hand and lunge whip in the other and change hands with out setting anything down. I have had horses for years and lunge at least one horse per day. It is one ofhte things I got good at. You will too with some time.
Have fun and be careful

Never hold all of the rope. If the horse bolts the rope can wrap around your hand and hurt you BAD!

However, on the flip side of that coin you MUST be aware of what your horse is doing and where AND where the end of the Lunge Line is laying so you or your horse don't step on it or have it wrap around either of your legs causing disaster!

Yes, practice makes 'perfect', but the thing I love about horses is that you can NEVER become 'perfect'... just better and better and better!!!!!

And remember, EVERY time you are with your horse you ARE __TRAINING__ it!!!

Good Luck, Have Fun and Be Safe!

If going in a very wide arc, there should be little or no extra rope. I have seen some trainers use a short rope, but walk a smaller circle with the horse as it makes it's rounds.

I'm guessing you are just starting to get involved with horses, yes? :) And, as with all things, the more you practice with something, the better you'll get. You can always play around with different styles or lengths of ropes to make you feel more comfortable when lunging.

*laughs* I hate dealing with that too and I've been working with horses for 11 years. It's okay. You just have to find your "happy" place with the left overs. My trainer will let it trail behind her, but she says with a laugh, don't do as I do.

You're suppose to keep it organized in one hand, however not loopped around your hand, since your horse could take off and drag you around and possibly kill you, then what would you do?

Find the safest way to hold the left overs without putting yourself in danger. Good luck! :)

It does get easier, however I am still waiting for a retractable lunge line...Dogs have them, why not horses?

I have found that putting the left over line over my shoulder helps me, that way it doesn't get tangled up as easily, and it definately makes a difference when long reining.

Apart from that, it's just practice.

Good Luck :)
