You were right the first time, it's called football. Soccer is a bastardised term invented by the English and adopted by the Americans.

Its not like a theatre play or a concert where you pay money to watch and you know its all going according to a script.
You don't know whats going to happen at the beginning, middle or end.

Anyone can beat anyone. There are upsets and story's of underdogs all the time. There are tricks that excite the spectator and there is simple football that excites as well.

Its a battle of individuals, of a team, of managers, coaches and backroom staff. Its about skill, strength, passion, belief and hard work.

Anyway can play football, from in front of 100,000 people to in the back garden or on the beach.

Its about a player wearing £120 boots against the boy who grew up playing on the beach with no shoes.

Its that feeling when you or your team scores a goal, there is nothing like it.

And its about playing in the pre qualifying round of the fa cup, dreaming about wembley.

I think its because you can understand it on any level. The objective is simple, easy to understand, and beyond that you can get into strategies and individual team members. Its like a chess game but with action. Also, the time between plays not only gives the players an opportunity to catch their breath, but it allows fans time to analyze whats happened and what will happen. Its pretty much a perfect game except for the injuries. Down with artificial turf!

it's so simple to pick up and so difficult to master. it can be played anywhere, by anyone of any size or athletic ability. it's a great team game. whether it's a few people on a field who've laid a couple of jumpers down or whether it's the world cup final being watched by hundreds of millions of people, it's always great. you don't need any special equipment or a great knowledge of the game just to get going. and it's hugely entertaining from a spectator's point of view too - it's not monotonous like rugby, there's always something different going on with the ball and the players

that is just the thing. you can't make a game better than football. it has so much excitement and it is so unpredictable that you just have to watch it and see what is going to happen next. anything can happen in a game and that makes it so much more exciting and worthwhile. and when someone scores, the hype surrounding the pitch is crazy even on TV. and when you see that break away or perfect cross and header, that is always awesome to see...it's just the best game in all the world, i can't even explain it, it goes beyond words.

The passion of playing and following the game.
It flows from the pitch right into the stands.

I'm sure its the same feeling for fans of other sports.

I think it's the social aspect - everyone has their favorite team, church lets out early on Sundays, superbowl parties, always something to talk about.
Are you ready for some football!?
