War strategy is not only about facing the enemy face to face but to try to attack the enemy where he leasts expects it. Cutting off the enemy's supplies will rob him of vital ammunition & food to sustain war.

It gave to the world the idea of total war. Meaning not only military targets but those of civilians were destroyed. Not only was this done to cut off supplies, but to instill fear and hopelessness in the enemy's civilian population with the hope of destroying their will to fight.
