His march cut off supplies to the Confederate army, thereby helped to shorten the Civil War.
War strategy is not only about facing the enemy face to face but to try to attack the enemy where he leasts expects it. Cutting off the enemy's supplies will rob him of vital ammunition & food to sustain war.

Grant and Lee could have gone on indefinitely slugging at each other in Virginia, but when Lee's men realised their supplies and homes were in danger, they started drifting away.

It gave to the world the idea of total war. Meaning not only military targets but those of civilians were destroyed. Not only was this done to cut off supplies, but to instill fear and hopelessness in the enemy's civilian population with the hope of destroying their will to fight.
