I'm on a soccer team and we get to pick the numbers. I want to be number 77 but the coach says that the higher numbers are for the worst players. But he told me it's still my choice. Is he right? Should I just stick with the lower numbers? And do you know of any famous tennis player that has a high number?

Sorry I meant soccer players not tennis players.

The top players usually opt for the numbers between 2 and 11, unless they're taken.
Numbers popular outside the lot is 14, 17,18,19, 20, 21, 23.

The last player I can recall wearing a number that far back in the 70 range was Francesco Coco of Milan. I think it was 71 or something. He was a left fullback, but not a starting one.
Why don't you try to make famous the 77?

I guess the numbers in sports are just something personal. Football has a rule where certain numbers are just reserved to specific positions.
Soccer doesn't have that restriction. It has been said that usually someone who moves the ball and has certain capabilities is a number 9 and a scorer is a number 10. That's pretty much it.
The number you wear doesn't say a thing about how good or bad you are. It is just different to wear a 77 than a 12 or a 7.
There is a good player who wore number 58 in Mexico and another one wore number 100.
It is your call.

Soccer is about tradition. there are some numbers that traditionally go to the better players or to the players in a certain position. For example number 9 10 and 11 will almost always be forwards. 9 Ronaldo in Brazil. 10 Michael Owen in England.
Number 7 is a attacking forward usually. That was Beckham's number in both Man U and the National Team. Raul of Real Madrid is number 7 eventhough he is a natural striker he always plays like a midfielder with great ability to score.

In the olden days players were just numbered 1 - 11 and you wore the number according to the position you played in. Then players got a bit precious and started claiming numbers for their own; this meant that a/they might be outwith this band, and b/numbers were allocated to players rather than positions and if you weren't the normal first team player, chances are you would be given a number higher than 11 and would play with this number whenever you played and in whatever position. Off the top of my head I can't think of a player higher than 20-odd; 77 is a bit weird, but go for it. It certainly doesn't mean you're a worse player but it's more of an American wussball player's number than a footballer's. ;)

Soccer numbers are usually lower numbers. It depends on how many are on the team. 77 for a soccer number would look really odd. Listen to you coach and pick a lower number.

pick any number you want, it really doesn't make a difference. No number reflects how good they player is, its usually just about their position. Number 10 doesn't mean your the best player at all, it just so happens that number10s are usually strikers. I mean Beckham is number 23 and i think Tevez's (West Ham)new number in 39, and their bloody good players. Anyway if you do wear 77 the opposition will probably think your the best player because you've been able to pick your own shirt number!

It's funny cuz I think u're coach is kinda right.
usually the best player of the squad gets 10, and he earns it, doesn't pick it himself.
the one that's second to the greatest player gets 9
the ones that are as good get 7 and 8.
the one that is ok and does a fairly good job for the team gets 11.

look at teams in number rows and go from 7-11, you'll see it's all star players.

there's this dude in Chivas who wears number 100 and his pretty good.looks crazy, but pretty good.

no, that's not true, if a really good player wants a high number, he can have it. think about it.. what if ronaldo said he wanted to be number 99? then he'd still be good at soccer. so if u really want 77, it's ok man, just show them how good you are at the field, and then maybe they'll want high numbers too, haha.

good luck.

Well I think you should go with 77 and show your coach that you can play. You can start a new trend if you get even better. I like number 11 best but go for what you want.
