I think you are referring to a little book by Jack Mingo. In Chapter 6, Page 21, he describes how Harley Earl, GM head car designer came up with the concept of "Dynamic obsolescense"

The reference to the P-38 actually is valid in 1948 Cadillacs, by 1952 the model was Douglas F4-D Skyray.

Harley Earl said "Listen I'd put smokestacks right in the middle of the sons of bitches if I thought I could sell more cars"

Bad grammar! Designers designed the cars, engineers worked out the tooling, material specs and assembly procedures, UAW union members and Cadillac employees put the cars together. Fins were a design feature on lots of cars in the old days. All cars got the fins the same way.

Harley Earl, the head of GM design after WWII, liked the looks of the Lockheed P-38 twin tailed fighter & suggested the designers incorporate the design on the rear fenders of the 1948 Caddy. If you look at the cross section of the fins & of the P-38 tail, you will see they are almost an exact match.
