I've read some Dostoevsky and Tolstoy: Good character development but the plots are just too drawn out. I have a friend who raves about Nabokov.

1. Tolstoy
2. Dostoyevsky
Nabokov was born in Russia, but he's not really a Russian novellist - he lived in France and the U.S. for a very long time - no insult meant!
Tchekov was a genius in short stories!
+ Turgenev - not a perfect stylist - but very Russian.

Dostoevsky by heads.

Add one more, Yevgeny Zamyatin who was the writer of "We" - an infamous novel got him imprisoned for years, and practically stolen by Orwell for "1984".
