I heard from a few friends that it is easier to get a title for a bike through the highway patrol than the DMV. I have no paper work on it and no clue where the owner is who gave it to me years ago. how and where do i get it?

It depends on what state you live in, but usually the requirements are as follows:

First, you have to get the paperwork from MVD for clearing and bonding a title.

Second, you have the VIN number inspected and cleared by a authorized law enforcement agency and officer. They run the VIN number through NCIC and make sure it isn't reported as stolen.

Third, you must bond out the title by purchasing a title insurance bond for the "declared" value of the motorcycle. Don't make it less than you would want to claim for insurance purposes if the bike is stolen.

Finally, you take the newly acquired insurance bond and VIN clearance paperwork to MVD and they will issue a new title based upon the bond and the cleared paper work!

Note the insurance bond is not the same as liability insurance for insuring the bike for road use. It is for a guarantee that if the bike later turns up as stolen then it insures the bearer for liability on the stolen vehicle.

Contact your local DMV to find out the procedures in your area.

Hope this helps.

why do you want a title for a dirt bike??? it can be boughts/sold with bill of sale, and if you title it you have to pay taxes on it every year you own it.
