my husband works in the DC area, so it has to be driveable.

Bethesda,MD truly is an amazing community. Its one of the best communities in the US as far as life quality goes. Its very close to DC, about 25 minutes by car, 10 minutes by metro, and has everything one can ask for in a community. Check out:

Well, as far as driveable, I can't help you there. The safest place I found when I lived in Maryland was Belair. Good luck.

Columbia! It was ranked top 5 in the best places to live. It's about 30-45 minutes from DC.

It's a planned community, has a big mall, and is really a great place both to visit and to live. My bro-in-law lives there, and we visit every year.

Hagerstown is about an hour and a half away and it as a pretty small town. with very cheap rent. i used to commute from hagerstown to largo,,just below DC.

DC itself has some really nice subberbs.
Baltimore sucks.

If you want to be cloe to DC you may want to live in Laurel or college park
