I stayed at Gouves Bay in '99 - it was October and the end of the season, and the hotel was in a very quiet place, away from the main street of tavernas, shops and an Irish pub. It was OK, but the beach wasn't very good, although the sea was indigo and sparkling, and they had coloured flags to indicate the level of danger for swimming. We had a nice walk from the hotel to the tavernas along the sea. It was not too far from Knossos, which was a must-see, and we weren't that impressed with Heraklion - though that might be because we only had a couple of hours there after visiting Knossos - but the market was good for olive oil, lemons and olives, etc. I think Hersonissos was a short bus ride along the coast, but that was too touristy for me.

Yes its ok,But go futher along the east cost to Vai thats where they made the bounty ad for tv.Its stunning.Been to Crete more than 10 times and woild say the west side of the island is nicer.
Have a great time.
Was there for 3 weeks this year.
