That is, when will we see cars that drive on their own on our city streets. I believe the technology is in its infancy now. I was hoping someone with some knowledge in the field could answer this. Yet another aspect aside from the technology is, how long do you suppose once the technology is available, will it take for governments and society as a whole to accept it?
I'm guessing it'll probably be at least 20 years, then again I'm no expert.

the cars ARE READY !!!! It's the people who aren't!

Most people, out there just aren't ready to give control to a machine. They want to be in control, even if it means a higher possibility of accident.

And unfortunately, the cars we now have just aren't ready to cope with eratic behaviour from the conductors (of itself and of other cars). But the technology is there if you're ready to force everyone to use an automated car and not drive it themself.

Why would we want to have automated cars? If they drive themselves, then I would just save money, not buy one, and take the bus or trolley.

They are here, but because people are irresponsible, we won't see them commonplace for about 50 years from now. Of course unless your very rich, or very intelligent, then you will see them or have one allot sooner, today even ;)
