I overheard a little girl maybe 4th grade talking to her grandma about some boy she likes. Her grandma was listening as if she was a teenager. The little rambeling on about how cute he is, and how she wants to date him. YES I said DATE.

What do you think, am I wrong to think this was toltally inapropriate? I mean shes no older than a 4th grader, and talking about boys...

My daughter is 2nd grade and yes she does talk about how cute boys are, however i'm not encouraging it like this grandma was. I just thought it to be way inaparopriate for such a young child.

what do you guys think?

ilistened to what the Grandma had to say. It was basically OH- and is he really cute. Wow that is great honey, is he a nice boy, ect, ect. It wasnt to much comming back from the grandma. I'm just shocked that children so young are even interested in boys.

Yes!!! that is wrong.. I think ( and this is my opinion) that parents and Grandparents are trying to be the kids friend. I see it everywhere & I believe this is gonna bite these parents/ friends in the ***!! sorry it sounded better then butt. Then when they are teenagers and having sex, they wonder why.. Hummmm !!
as you can tell this is a sore issue with me..

Well they start liking boys at young ages the same goes for boys, my son is in the first grade and its not the first time i heard him say "she's pretty" or "she's cute" i think its natural, and by date i dont think the little girl would actually end up going on a date, if her parents let her they'd be out of they're minds... although im sure nothing would really happen however its the thought of allowing your daughter or son think that it is ok, to be an adult or think like an adult at such a young age!! i agree with you it is crazy... however it is normal for them to start noticing the opposite sex at a young age as weird as that may be!!

Well i dont know bout everyone else, but i started dating when i was 9, which was the age i had my first kiss at, and lost my virginity at 13. i always thought they were the normal ages, but i dont know. Personally i think that girl is at an age where you DO start to fancy people and if she wants to date him thats fine. And good on that grandma for acting really helpful towards her!
I mite be completely wrong in saying this, but i think if you condemn your child saying and doing that she may become a rebel and hate you for not letting her do her own thing - maybe you should try to see things from her point of view if she starts that, and not think its inapropriate just because of her age.

yea its a little to young to me too but this day and time you wouldnt believe how these kids act or say.My daughter is 13 and everyday one of her friends is in love and 2 days later the same girl and guy are broke up and he is with another girl!NAd these kids see nothing wrong with this, its normal for them. They date each others boyfriends, when i was a kid that was a no no you never dated a guy your friend went with .these poor kids have no morals it seems. They are already having sex, getting body piercings ,cussing like sailors ,smoking and some even doing drugs its sad and parents need to be more involved but this day and age parents are too busy and look what these kids see on tv anymore and they music they listen too and we wonder why are kids now days acting like this cmon if people would just sit back pay attention they would see the problems and put a stop to it.

I was "going out" in the 4th grade. Which meant nothing BUT being bf/gf which usually consisted of playing together on the playground. Nothing to dramatic. The girl might have an older sister or something. I wouldn't worry about it. It's just young kids.

I think that kids were "going out" when I was in about 4th grade, or certainly 5th. It doesn't mean anything besides that they tell all their friends they're "going out." And that they probably watch too much TV.

Lighten up. The Grandma had it right.

I think it is just innocence. Is it not better that the grandmother listened rather then dismiss the child, what if the child had a more pressing matter she needed to talk about, is it not better that they feel they can cofide and talk to a person instead of feeling that they have nobody to talk to. Why does it bother people so much how other people bring up their kids?

I think it's totally wrong, I have a daughter, only in pre k but I work at a school, these girls are totally out of contron and have no understanding of what their doing or why. I personally think as parents the majority is too busy to pay attention to what their children are into.

OK, I try not to be a prude, but I am sooooo glad my daughter is not boy crazy. She IS encouraged to talk like this, she probably gets asked all the time at home about "boyfriends". They probably thought it was cute...it is until she's pregnant at 15.

keep in mind dating to a fourth grader involves pulling hair and calling her names, maybe if shes really lucky he might hold her hand for a few seconds.
i have a son in the third grade and every second day hes telling me about some girl he wants to marry.
just kids being kids, acting like grownups.
