If you're not comfortable going into a canter, the horse will definitely pick up on it and become hesitant. And that' s just another way to create another falling incident. I wouldn't until I felt comfortable enough.
I was thrown pretty hard for like the ten billionth time a few months ago and bruised a joint in my lower back/hip. Still hurts like heck sometimes, but that's probably because I got right back on my horse after I stopped laying on the ground laughing at myself for being such a clutzy idiot.

You could try cantering on a 10-20mtr (30-60ft) circle in diameter, that way, you have more control of the pace. You could use a round yard, or one end of an arena for this. Personally, I found that to be a great way to experience their canter without feeling like you could loose control.
I also think that it's important for you to set a goal as to when you will canter, and follow through with it. Set yourself a reasonable time frame to work yourself up and gain confidence, and then go for it. It's going to be one of those times where you break out of your comfort zone, but you will feel better when you've accomplished your goal.
Bestoluck to you :)

Okay sweetie, get back on that horse and canter like you have never cantered before! lol! I fell with my horse back in Febuary! I was riding on a nice warm day in winter, after it just started to warm up, the oil on the aspalt made him lose his grip and we fell together and he crushed my leg! I had a broken bone in my ankle and pulled alot of muscles(at that time i also worked on a dairy farm)because my foot had gotten stuck in the stirrup! I know how you feel to, every bit of it! ( we fell when cantering too!) I was afraid to even ride him for a week, but that part of my heart said i cant give up horses, because of one accident! If you love your horse get back on that horse and dont ever let him know that you are afraid of cantering! Horses have that sense of fear. They will take you for a joy ride and it going to be a b**** to stop them from doing that! Girl, just let that horse be and ride like you did before you fell off! if you wana talk more you can email me whenever! Bye and Good Luck!!!!

i say you should if your confident in the horse and in your self. you MUST be sure that you trust the horse enough to canter. i started cantering one time on a horse that i had met that very same day and im still alive!(lol) it really depends on the horse. this is a tough question to answer, because different horses have different personalitys. well i hope that helps! good luck!

try getting riding lessons. they can help you learn your balance and get you ready to canter...you have to use muscles you never knew you had with riding. the more you ride the better your balance will get. I have been riding and competing in Dressage and English (equitation and over fences) for over 15 years and I couldnt even begin to count the number of times I have either lost my balance and fallen off, the horse lost its balance and fallen off, or I just plain got thrown off. Consider the fall your true initiation with riding horses. Good luck and keep at it!!!

why shouldnt you? just because you fell off doesnt mean you shouldnt try again. Be brave, face your fears, and go for it! When you do, and you dont fall off again, it will all be worth it and you will love it.
