With any 2 given points there is a distance that separates them. When driving your car this distance is recorded by your odometer. The word odometer is derived from two Greek words, the first being ”hodos” meaning path and the second being “metron” meaning measure.

The odometer is often represented by a series of numbers that spin in a numerical sequence as the car travels forward. This is achieved through a cable that is attached to the wheel of your car and as that wheel turns the cable then turns the numbers. The numbers themselves are actually inscribed on a wheel masked by a face plate and while the cable spins it is tuning the wheel in a forward progression.

The odometer is typically located just under the speedometer in the center of the dash console. Some vehicles have begun using a digital read out to display your odometer. In either case, the odometer is used to verify the total mileage a car is driven during its life time. It also has a secondary function to track the mileage of an individual trip. This can be very beneficial in calculating the estimated time of your arrival to your destination as well as your fuel consumption during your travel.

Most importantly, don’t forget that every 3,000 miles you travel it is time to change your oil in the engine, which is just another reason why an odometer can be a great resource to you. Hope this helps.
