I heard of a housewife who doesn't work because she wins cars, trips, clothes, groceries, etc.

They probably read the fine print. Knowing every possible way to legally enter yourself into such contests dramatically boosts your chances of winning.

For example, say there were a million entries with one grand prize winner. It goes year-round (Jan 1 to Dec 31) and you can make one entry per day. If you entered once in that year your chances of winning the grand prize would literally be one in a million. But if you entered 2 times that doubles your chances of winning although it is still extremely small chances (1 in 500,000). But if you entered once each day that'd be 1 in 2739.7.... which means if you enter for free you could very well win a grand prize in a major sweepstakes once in your life or even in multiple ones.
