they should probably be over 11 years of age, be mature and be able to handle themselves in stressful situations, know first aid and CPR and know the correct procedures in case of an emergency.

sometimes it isn't even up to you there was a lady where I am from that got 4 months in jail for leaving her 19 mo. with her 11-year old I think really it depends on how long whether it is at day or night or how mature you child is and the age of the child they are baby siting because I think a mature 11-year old should be fine for a child that is at least 3 in the daytime for 3 hours or so

it is deffently all of the above. I wouldnt leave someone home alone that was 15 if i didnt trust them and they werent mature enough. I also wouldnt leave a 9 year old home alone no matter what. I think a good age would be 13 as long as they we trustwrthy and mature. you are the parent what do you think?

Well, It is a combination of ALL. Hypotheticly speaking; you could have a twelve year old that has the maturity of a 16 year old, and on the other hand you could also have a 16 year old who acts like a twelve year old! You know your child/children better than anyone, so in the end you are going to have to make the final decision! Do you trust your own judgement? and Do you trust your son or daughters judgment? these are the sort of questions you need to ask yourself! only you know the real answer.
Good luck and God bless!

First I would check with the state in which you live in to see what the legal age is for a child to be able to stay home alone. Then it would depend on how mature your child/children are.Because even tho they may be of legal age to stay home alone, alot of them aren't mature enough to stay home alone.

I think you should take all three of those into consideration. My husband is an LEO and I know in some state there is a law on how old they can be and stay at home alone.

it really depends my sisters weren't allowed to be left home alone more then an hour until they turned 12 because they didnt really use alot of common sense. I was allowe dto stay home alone for an hour or 2 when i was 8 cuz i taught myself how to do everythhing. cook, clean, get myself ready for skool i raised myself but my parents did that becuz i was responsible eough to be trusted. i like being alone it makes me very happy im around people all day at skool i dont wanna be surrounded at home too.

I say all three, I was left alone at the age of 7 and nothing happened, but my mother was careful to teach me everything I needed to know regarding emergencies and food prep.

If your child can hear all that and remember it, and you trust that he or she will actually do it in the event of an emergency,
or
you feel your child will be alright in the event that you are caught in 4 hours of traffic, I say go for it.

It only takes one idiot to take your quick run to the store from 15 minutes to 2 hours.

i think maturity is the major factor and age is minor. obviously i don't mean to leave a 7 yr old alone
