Yesterday never ends in anyone's mind. There will always be tomorrow, today & yesterday.
Therefore if yesterday ended for someone last night than they must be dead.

It means to me, that at Midnight last night, yesterday, or the day before if you prefer, was over. Which is correct. For at midnight, the day changes to the next.
