It matters because, through literature, I can experience lives, events, adventures, experiences, emotions of other people in a much more intimate way than I ever could staring at the tube. I learn things about the world that i would never have learned otherwise. I gain understanding of people, situations, different times and ideas in a book. Yes, it's entertaining and educational and transports me out of myself to times and places that are unavailable to me in my real life. Quite frankly, I can't understand how a person can live a complete life without the magic of books. To live without reading for pleasure is like being without one of my senses.

Some of the best writers on TV were inspired by literature.

Without literature, you'd be watching reruns of THE SURREAL LIFE and FLAVA OF LOVE all week.
