Marriage is the ultimate commitment between two and or their families. I've learned you do marry a person, but if you are the right person you accept their family and in order to attempt to keep peace; the newlywed couple should establish boundaries for the families so not to alienate one another. People get married for various reasons, love being the first and foremost. Then you have religious, family, financial backgrounds. Things in common and on the off chance opposites attract. People feel the need to get married for security! From a woman's point of view and often a mans point view (the ones that will admit it), you want that special bond with that one person and as far as intimacy why would you want to share this with more than one person. Settling down doesn't mean settling for someone. It simply means maturity, you've reached a point in your life where clubbing, bed hopping, and hanging w/your friends just don't seem to for fill you. Not to say you will never go out or hang out w/your friends you will just have someone to go home to.

Well being married is a formal way of being committed to the 1 u love. I choose to get married becuzz i want my kids to know their father and to have a close relationship with him.
Why did u ask this question anyway! seems like u r running from committment.

I married my husband after 14 yrs together, we decided to get married after he had an accident and I wasn't allowed to make decisions on his behalf. We have children together and he didn't want myself or our children to be left out of the loop on medical/legal issues. I believe that the commitment is from within, I don't need a piece of paper to bind me to him, my love does that and his for me but in this world without the piece of paper it leaves the 'other person' on the sidelines if decisions need to be made on your behalf, who would know better what you want than your significant other? The license didn't change anything for us but made it legal in the eyes of the law to make crucial decisions at crucial times in each others lives.

because the courts hate to waste their time dividing up bills and stuff for people who just play house. If someone is married they have rights and obligations that are only recognized in marriage.

i believe marriage is you setting aside all others, not because you have to, but because you want to spend the rest of your life loving that person..It's a feeling, not a piece of paper. i got married becuz i knew that this was the person whom i could be myself around for the rest of my life and even though i knew we would have issues here and there i just knew we had that unconditional love. i was very much in love and believed she was as much in love with me. simple as that. did i find the happiness i expected, she cheated on me does that answer your question.
