There is no media coverage on the global pandemic of AIDS, TB and other diseases.

In 2005 about 3 million people in subSaharan Africa died of AIDS, 500,000 were children. Each year 2,000,000 poor die of TB.

Every year we are reminded of the Holocaust, by some Hollywood film on the them.

Why does the US and Western media ignore this pandemics? If it is racially oriented, then in my mind it is passive genocide.

For some reason its not 'newsworthy'. Do you think there should be more awareness of these pandemics?

There is media coverage but it comes on the form of infomercials that most people don't want to watch. It is far easier to change the channel and ignore the problem. The other problem is that our society, in general, has become desensitized to violence and horror via the entertainment industry, so even when we are subjected to images of the pandemics that occur around the world, most of us are unmoved.

It takes tragedies like 9/11 and the hurricanes that occurred on our home soil to move the nation - just as it takes a personal experience of losing a loved one from a disease like AIDS or cancer to fully understand how inept our government is when it comes to providing health care to its own citizens, let alone the rest of the world.

Is it genocide? Perhaps, but genocide based upon the age old concept of the wealthy possessing the majority of the power. The wealthy can afford health care and the best treatment. Why should they care about the rest of us?

I think there should be more awareness on everything. For the most part, people don't care about stuff that's not happening to them, meaning a lot people don't care about other people. This made me think of an interesting point I'm aware of. You say every year we're reminded of the Holocaust, yet here in America we had our own little genocide a few hundred years ago when we killed off all the Native Americans. They went from 100% of the US population to LESS THAN 1%. But who cares about minorities right? It's sad. All those people in Africa are dying, yet there's people here making millions of dollars a year and still whining. Sometimes I really hate us.

We are the United States. As a whole, we don't care about an issue unless it is directly harming us and our own country (and the ones of us that do are labeled as complainers or hippies). Unfortunately, most media will not be successful if they report events that will be unpopular with readers. Most readers don't want to read about AIDS in Africa, so the media don't report this. They are working like any other organization -- they must make a profit and stay in business. In a perfect world, media would report on these issues and get the word out there. Unfortunately, there is just not enough public interest.

Yes...there should be more awareness, but as I said, the people don't want to read about it.

Wow, I am in love. I don't know who you are blueblood, but you sure do ask the right questions. The reason we do not hear of these situations is because they effect the poor and people of colour. Africans are expendable in the Western media which is much more anxious about keeping the oil supply that fuels luxury while the world goes hungry. Thank you for raising this. You must be a very good and intelligent person.

From the postings I have seen in here, very few seem to listen to the news. All that seems to show up are opinions with very evident emotional overtones. Evidently no one seems to be aware of how much money was set aside for the fight on aids (by Bush) as well as him prodding the UN to get more active.. Of course that can't be mentioned, as it would possibly be construed to make Bush look good. But it did hit the news media.

Why should the US and Western media be charged with passive genocide, we know of the problems with AIDS, TB and other diseases, They are not responsible to cure all of the worlds problems. There are diseases here that we have to take care of and I dont see anyone jumping in to help.

No media coverage on AIDS?

Do a google search and you'll be proven wrong.

Thus you're wasting time and money, Mr. I'm so concerned about the world.

It was disgusting of you to put a reference of the holocaust in your "question". It says a lot about you.
