The 79 eruptions of Mt. Vesuvius on August 24 – 25, 79 AD covered the city of Pompeii with lava. With Pompeii's estimated 20,000 residents, only about 2,000 have been found in excavations after such volcanic explosion. A ruin of Pompeii was discovered in the mid-eighteenth century. Humans had robbed it. They exposed it by taking away the covered earth and robbed some more, until about two thirds of the city was uncovered. Today archaeologists are still trying to figure out this remarkable intact city. In the summer 1994 archaeologists spent a month building and exploring Pompeii. Archaeologists took pictures of a lot of the oddities they stumbled on.
Pompeii is located west Italy in a region called Campania, near the Bay of Naples. With the coast to the west and the Apennine Mountains to the east, Campania is able to produce things that lie by two major rivers and blessed with soil rich in bones and salt.

It was the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. It erupted in the first century. I believe it was like 74 AD or something like that. It covered the streets of Pompei with ash and lava decimating the village.
