UK Employment agencies are bound by law (Data Protection Act) NOT to sell your information unless you gave them your explicit permission.
However, there are many agencies who have sneakily worded their online registration procedures so that they will be allowed to transfer your information to subsidiaries or sister companies. These would usually be other recruitment companies under the same umbrella organisation, and the transfer of data is masked under the pretence of “making the best of your job search”.

However, if you suspect they sold your information to an irrelevant partner, please contact the consumer council and report your suspicions.

Reputable ones do not. Why would they: if they place you, they make money. If they on-sell your information, then they could miss out on placing you.

If you do come accross an agency that has sold your information - and you can prove that they have - then you should report it to the appropriate privacy authority.

Under the data protection act they cannot. If they do they could get prosecuted. Thing is finding out if they do!

Yes they do. They are not as bad as your bank, but they do 'data sell'. Try speaking to someone on their helpline and ask to speak to a supervisor, they'll give you more info.
