A marathon is both mental as well as physical. I'd use maturity as a guide rather than age. You're not talking about breaking a Guiness record for youngest marathoner are you? I wouldn't suggest that, but if a child has the inclination AND PREPARATION, I don't think there is a hard fast age limit.

Anyone training for a marathon knows it's a long road literally and figuratively. Especially with the very young and very old, training should go conservatively. Has the child completed 5k, or 10k runs? Maybe build up to a half-marathon before attempting a full marathon. Any of these are significant accomplishments for a child of any age. What's the longest run the child has done? What is the weekly mileage? Use a higher range like 40-50 for a readiness test.

Be sure to check with the child's doctor regularly, especially if there are any problems or concerns about heart disease. And on marathon day be sure to provide the extra needed support.

Coach the child, encourage the child, but don't pressure the child. And if the child is overeager, you need to step in and place limits. Remember, safety first! Good luck!

Just a suggestion, I've seen some pretty young kids run. You should go to some of the Marathon websites, and check out the times and ages for the younger runners. It'll get you an idea...

I would say 16. I have seen kids as young as 12 run a half marathon, but a full one takes a lot more effort.

A lot of marathons wont even let you enter if you are under 16, and only under 18 with a parents signed permission.

I wouldn't advise it. Marathon running is hard on joints. Childrens joints are still growing. It could cause major problems down the road.

I would think 14 or 15. Unless they are running it on a bike. A marathon is too hard on kid's developing muscle and bone structures. Training is too rigorous.
