I bought a 2nd hand car (part exchange) which has low milage, 1 owner, 6 years old but now it turns out is has some problems with it which are much bigger then 1st expected. Now we are considering asking dealer for swap for another of his cars but feeling a bit vulnerable after 1st car we were thinking about a car check but they are quite expensive and so I don't know if it's worth it or not or whats best to do- what are my rights?

Just spending a tiny proportion of the cost of the car on having it checked over and checked out will always be money well spent.

Buying a new car may mean that your warranty covers the cost of the breakdowns you will still have, all you have to pay is the huge depreciation that new cars suffer, which in my experience (though often forgotten) will be much more than the cost of any breakdowns that your well checked second-hand car will have.

Used cars still depreciate, but never as much (in such a short time) as new cars.

It is possible to buy your own warranty on your second-hand car (this is all car dealers do when you buy a warrantied car from them), for peace of mind, it may be worth doing this, but buy carefully and read the small print in the policy.

Dealers can be caught out with cars too, this one might be an honest mistake. Ask your mechanic (or failing that, the AA or RAC assuming UK) to check out your next one and buy a warranty for peace of mind.

Nothing is guaranteed in this life, even new cars have down sides and this is the chance we all take. Is the car you have now really beyond all hope?

The way I look at it is that it is worth wasting a small amount rather than thousands - the cost of the car check compared to what you are about to spend on the car!

Is it worth wasting a little more cash and having a word with a lawyer to find out exactly where you stand? They answer a lawyer gives you will be rather more accurate than the conflicting answers you are likely to receive on Answer! The CAB (Citizens Advice Bureau) may also be able to advise you.

Good luck with your purchases!!!

Any car that is 6 years old can have problems, if your not mechanically inclined, probably best to have it looked at, also check history or reliability with Edmonds, and JD powers.

if you dont know anything about cars then it could be the best money u ever spent. although it does not guarantee no defects. there is no real recourse if you buy a dodgy motor its all down to the luck of the draw
