this is completely false. people have been on the earth for thousands of years. right now there is about 6 billion people in the world. just think of it as 100 years ago probably 5 billion and 200 years ago 4 billion. now most of those people have died and that is over 6 billion so no, your data is incorrect.

It could be possible. With the advent of modern medicines far more people that in our entire history are surviving to produce the next generation. I've read that the Black Death killed around half of Europes population in the middle ages and including the Middle East, India and China killed at least 75 million.
If that is to be believed and assuming it killed a similar proportion in the latter regions as the former that would put the population of Europe, the Middle East, India and China at about 150 million. Include other diseases like polio, diphtheria, smallpox and many many others which we seldom hear of now, I can well believe that the population of the human race has been kept fairly small until quite recent times by diseases.
Oh, and I forgot Tuberculosis which was also prevalent until post 2nd World War. The widespread use of antibiotics saw it's demise, but some strains are now becoming resistant and I suppose we can expect it's widespread reappearance. It still kills large numbers in the Indian sub-continent I believe.

I find that a bit of a stretch. Ever is a long time, and a lot of people have come and gone. I did have an economics professor tell me, about 4 years ago, that the entire population of the world could be accommodated comfortably in a single housing project the size of Texas.

I Actually believed the urban myth that 75% of those born were still alive in the later half of the 20th century. But I think the argument is reasonable presented elsewhere.
Where Haub estimates this to be 5.8%, lets call it one twentieth.
Bash the source in a search engine and you can see all his maths. Quite fun to read.
