What is the difference between galvanized pipe and black pipe in small diameters [1/2"-2"]? Is the alloy different or is the difference simply that one is galvanized?

La LOUSY, you don't know the first thing about me. Why have you started to begin attacking me now, all of a sudden? I find that strange. Your mother should have taught you some respect but obviously, she didn't. If you were as smart as you think you are, you wouldn't have to come on here and attack me -a total stranger who you know nothing about with stupid generalizations. This makes you look like a fool. Why is it that you don't have any contact info....coward? That must be it. You are afraid of a two sided conversation. If you don't like my questions, look the other way. The only piece of crap around here is YOU. Just extend me the same courtesy as I have extended you all this time and leave me alone.

The difference is the galvanizing coating that helps protect the pipe from rust. The size issue doesn't matter, this is true for all sizes of galvanized pipe.

In the old days, you could ONLY use Black pipe for natural gas.The galvanized pipe was for supply and waste water. Now adays,The only difference is color. It is just to help determine and seperate the pipes from gas or drain. The black coating was used in the past so as the gas would not react with the galvanic coating, which would flake off and could get caught in your flue or burner, causing problems.Black pipe will rust and is cheaper while galvanized will not rust, atleast for @ 50 years. Some building codes STILL require black pipe for gas supply.

Galvanized pipes are mostly used as ducts for wiring purposes. The black pipes are used for gas piping. The black piping has a special coating and a particular type of sealant are applied at the joints to seal air-tight.

The galvanized pipes do not rust so no kind of corrosion can occur that would cause a bad line resulting in any shortage.

Galvanized prohibits rusting. Black iron does not. Depending on your application, that dictates which to use.

don't believe everything you read!!!
you're right about the difference, is just the coating
But the uses are diff.
Gal. for supply water only, not used much anymore Cause it corrodes inside and plugs up (do not use for natural gas!!!!)
Copper and plastics have taken over
Black pipe is used for natural gas, but is being phased out by new and more flexible products (and therefore easier to work with)
Neither is use for Electrical
