Melbourne is freezing in winter, but has much to offer culturally.
Sydney is cool in winter but there are more job opportunities.
Brisbane is beautiful, weather wise, all year round with a slower lifestyle and cheaper cost of living than the other two.
Have lived in all three as well and Brisbane would be my choice.

Hi Sassy_Scorpio,
Queensland has a great climate, and it more affordable to live. If I was to move there with my husband and 3 kids I would move to the Gold Coast (approx 1 hour drive south of Brisbane) or sightly inland to Nergan where it a bit cheaper in real estate.
The shopping, beaches, schools, surfing and life style are all really good. Traffic is not bad except in the school holidays. The Gold Coast has Australia's best attractions for family's to visit. Like Warner Brothers Movie World and Dream World. But as far as pursuing a acting career you are better of in Sydney or Melbourne.

Melbourne is about a twelve hour drive south of Sydney and has a great culture in Theatre, Arts, Restaurants, shopping. The beaches are different to Sydney and The Gold Coast because Melbourne is located close the Port Phillip were there is a nice suburb called St Kila. Port Phillip is a very large bay so there are no waves if you are into surfing. But the place has great pubs and bands and an English feel about it.
In winter it gets a lot colder than Sydney but its not to far to drive to some great Ski Resorts like Mt Hotham. The last few years Melbourne has also been experiencing very hot Summers. http://www.accommdinnerplain.com.au/hotham.htm

Sydney has a good climate except over the last couple of years we have been have a very dry winters so we are all on water resitions. Sydney is the Captial of New South Wales and Canberra is the Captial of Australia its about a 2 1/2 hours drive south of Sydney.
I moved to Sydney over 20 years ago and love living here, if your son is into surfing then the Northern Beaches are a good choice. If you are into hiking, climbing and like to sit in front of a log fire in winter them the Blue Mountains are the go.
I could go on forever. If you would like more details

Melbourne is known as the most English city in the world outside of England. Sydney is much faster paced and is also Australia's biggest city. Being a Sydney boy myself I'm inclined to say Sydney simply because more foreigners know about it. BUT...Unlike a lot of Sydneysiders I absolutely love Melbourne...so here's my suggestion.....try both

I prefer Melbourne myself, but for a bit of perspective, I asked the temp working with me who is from the UK.
She said she liked Sydney and would like to go back and live there again, however living in Melbourne was easier to get work and housing.
Good luck with your choice.

It's up to you on where you would like to live. I've lived in Melbourne for 6 months and couldn't wait to go back to Adelaide. My sister-in-law lived in Sydney and now lives here in Adelaide and wouldn't have it anyother way. I like Adelaide for the simple fact that Adelaide is more down to earth than Melbourne and Sydney. Don't get me wrong Melbourne and Sydney are great cities and have many good things about them but I would only go there to visit. If you like warmer weather go to Queensland.

lived in Sydney and I lived in Melbourne.
All depends you age, what you like were you lived before what work you intent to do, etc, etc.
both places are the best in the whole world in wich to live and raise a family.
I prefer Melbourne.
When you new in Oz there always be the dilemma of where you want to live, my advise see both places by yourself.
Live a while In Sydney them live a while in Melbourne, then decide.
The rest of Australia it's only good for holidays

Melbourne. I lived there for 6 months and loved it. It's not as full of posers as Sydney. Much more laid back and culturally rich. I loved it and was heartbroken moving back to Ireland.
